About Joe Cariati

Award-winning artist, craftsman, and educator Joe Cariati has spent over 25 years mastering the art of glassblowing. As a designer, maker, and mentor, Joe’s work is a unique fusion of calculated precision and timeless beauty.

The Beginning

At San Francisco State University, Joe Cariati’s journey into glassblowing began unexpectedly. He first caught a glimpse of someone working with molten glass through a chain-link fence and immediately thought, "I have to try that." That moment sparked a passion that took hold of him instantly. Like many glassblowers, Joe felt an instant connection to the craft, falling naturally into the rhythm of his peers, all driven by the same intense blend of passion and determination. Glassblowing, known to many as one of the most challenging crafts, demands years of dedication—some say it takes a decade just to become decent. Though mastery may forever remain elusive, Joe's approach has always been about the practice itself—constantly learning, refining, and pushing forward.

Evolution

Around 2002, Joe Cariati began producing a line of bottles that quickly became known as the Angelic Bottle Collection. His obsession with Mid-Century Modern design fueled this growth, as he sought to create what he felt was missing from the market. By paying homage to the iconic look of Mid-Century Modernism, Joe was able to reinterpret, expand, and modernize these designs, leading to the creation of other notable works like the Decanter Collection and Carmella Barware. Taking the same innovative mindset to market, Joe applied for a design-focused trade show in New York City, aiming to fill a gap he perceived in the interior design world. His vision was to see his pieces in high-end spaces, produce in volume and create lifelong collectable pieces.

Heritage

As his practice evolved, Joe eventually grew his small studio into his own 10,000 sq. ft warehouse studio space where he continues to hand blow ever single piece. It has since been cultivated into a place with an open-door policy; people gather, share ideas, research, and continuously collaborate. It's a creative space that fosters both artistic exploration and community. And as his brand has continued to change and grow, so has his passion for the art of production; the focus on efficiency, economy of movement, and the repetition that comes with mastering a craft. For him, it's not about perfection, but about doing more, refining through action. Through his unwavering commitment to craftsmanship and innovation, Joe has not only mastered the art of glassblowing but also elevated it to new heights.

His work is a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity, where the elegance of mid-century design meets the meticulous precision of Venetian technique.

With each piece, Cariati continues to push the boundaries of his medium, inspiring collectors and makers alike with his dedication to quality and artistry. As both a leader and mentor in the field, Joe Cariati's legacy is one of timeless design, relentless pursuit of mastery, and a deep passion for the art of creation.
